Throughout the interviewing process you will certainly be asked about your references.

Many job seekers simply provide a short list of names and phone numbers. However, if you really want to land the job it is important that you strategize about your references as much as you do about your resume and interview. The opinions of your former managers and coworkers will make or break the ability to land the job.

Here are some things you can do to select the best references to help you get an offer.

Choose the people who worked with you most directly.
Look at your work history and determine who among your previous managers, supervisors, or coworkers would be able to give the best and most accurate information. Remember, this doesn’t need to be a glowing review of your work. The new employer will ask “what can they improve” and the reference should be able to provide a concise and useful answer.

Select from a number of reference categories.
When choosing names and contact info to provide make sure you have all the bases covered. You want a new employer to talk to people who can speak about your overall ethics as well as your character. You may also want to select mentors who can talk about what it was like to help you learn your skills over time.

Get their permission.
Before you give names and phone numbers to a prospective employer, make sure you’ve asked for their permission. It is a really great idea to stay in touch with those people from your past who will provide your best references. Give them a call or shoot them an email to let them know what to expect.

Send thank you notes.
Another great way to keep in touch with your references is to send them a thank you note after they’ve spoken with a potential new employer. Mail a hand written note thanking them for the time they spent and reiterating that you would like to stay in touch with them long term. If you don’t have a mailing address for them, you can send an email.
